Iranian woman facing stoning: ‘I’m afraid of dying’

London, England (CNN) — In a room thousands of miles from her prison cell in northeastern Iran, the fear that has gripped Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani for years was clear and almost palpable.

“The day I was given the stoning sentence, it was as if I fell into a deep hole and I lost consciousness,” said a human rights advocate, reading aloud from a letter attributed to Ashtiani. “Many nights, before sleeping, I think to myself how can anybody be prepared to throw stones at me; to aim at my face and hands? Why?”

Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, was set to be stoned to death for allegedly committing adultery in Iran. Members of the International Committee Against Executions, who have launched a public campaign for her freedom, held a news conference Friday to share a letter they said was from Ashtiani, who is being held in a Tabriz prison, and court documents from her case.

“I thank all of you from Tabriz prison,” the letter said. Referring to advocate Mina Ahadi, Ashtiani wrote, “Mrs. Ahadi, tell everyone that I’m afraid of dying. Help me stay alive and hug my children.”

The group also presented court documents it said refuted a July 8 statement from the Iranian government that denied Ashtiani would be executed by stoning.

Ashtiani was convicted of adultery in 2006 and was originally sentenced to death by stoning, but the sentence was put on hold earlier this month after an international outcry. Protesters rallied worldwide on July 24 in support of her, pushing for her release.

Next week, the Iran judiciary may release their final judgment in the Ashtiani case, deciding whether to reinstate her sentence of death by stoning, execute her by another means, or possibly even grant her a reprieve, according to human rights groups.

Earlier this month, her attorney Mohammad Mostafaei told CNN that his client confessed to the crime after being subjected to 99 lashes. She later recanted the confession and has denied wrongdoing, he said.

“I am now quiet and sad because a part of my heart is frozen,” Ashtiani’s letter says. “The day I was flogged in front of [my son] Sajjad, I was crushed and my dignity and heart were broken.”

Mostafaei himself has gone into hiding since last weekend after being interrogated by Iranian authorities, human rights groups say. Advocates says his wife and brother-in-law are being held by Iranian authorities.

“I think it is a very dangerous situation for Mr. Mostafaei,” Ahadi has said. “If he were to present himself to the authorities he might receive 10 to 15 years in prison, and I think we must put pressure on the Islamic regime so that his wife and brother will be released.”

رابرت گیبز، سخنگوی کاخ سفید، روز جمعه در مصاحبه ای در تلویزیون ان بی سی گفت تمام کاری که دولت می تواند انجام دهد این است که از هر کسی که اسناد را در اخیتار دارد درخواست کند آنها را پست نکند.

گیبز گفت یک سخنگوی طالبان در منطقه اظهار داشت طالبان هم اینک به بررسی هزاران سندی که قبلا پست شده پرداخته است تا اسامی کسانی را که با نیروهای بین المللی و آمریکا در افغانستان همکاری کرده اند پیدا کند.

گیبز گفت طالبان هشدار داده است «می داند چگونه این افراد را مجازات کند.»

دریادار مایک مولن، رییس ستاد مشترک ارتش آمریکا، گفت «جولیان آسانگ» بنیان گذار ویکی لیکس و منبع اطلاعاتی او «ممکن است هم اینک دست های خود را به خون یک سرباز جوان یا یک خانواده افغان آغشته کرده باشند.»

در ماه آوریل، ویکی لیکس ویدیوی محرمانه ای از حمله هلیکوپتری درعراق در سال ۲۰۰۷ پست کرد. در آن حمله دو عراقی که برای خبرگزاری رویترز کار می کردند کشته شدند. دو ماه بعد، ارتش آمریکا اعلام کرد «منینگ» را به اتهام فاش کردن اطلاعات محرمانه بازداشت کرده است.

او همچنین پس از آن که ویکی لیکس هزاران سند محرمانه در ارتباط با جنگ افغانستان منتشر کرد، مورد سوءظن قرار گرفت.

کلینتون از ایران خواسته است سه کوهنورد آمریکایی را آزاد کند

هیلاری کلینتون، وزیر امور خارجه آمریکا، از ایران خواسته است سه کوهنورد آمریکایی را که یک سال است بدون محاکمه در بازداشت به سر می برند آزاد کند.

خانم کلینتون روز جمعه در بیانیه ای که سخنگوی وزارت امور خارجه قرائت کرد گفت آزادی کوهنوردان «بسیاردیر شده است و ادامه بازداشت آنها قابل توجیه نیست.»

کوهنوردان – شین بوئر، سارا شورد، و جاش فتال – در ۳۱ ژوئیه سال ۲۰۰۹، در امتداد مرز ایران و عراق دستگیر شدند، و در زندان اوین در تهران زندانی هستند.

مادران سه کوهنورد در مصاحبه ای انحصاری با شبکه خبری فارسی صدای آمریکا – پی ان ان – گفتند آنها قصد دارند برای جلب توجه مردم به وضعیبت دشوار فرزندانشان برنامه هایی ترتیب دهند.

خانواده ها روز جمعه در مقابل دفتر هیات نمایندگی جمهوری اسلامی در نیویورک جمع شدند.

مادر سارا شورد گفت تقریبا هیچ اطلاعی درباره سه کوهنورد در دست نیست. او گفت بسیار نگران وضعیت دخترش می باشد که از یک سال پیش در زندان انفرادی در اوین محبوس است.

مادر جاش فتال گفت او می خواهد مقامات ایران بدانند «آنچه می گذرد بی عدالتی است و فرزندان ما باید بازگردند.»

مدیر بخش خاورمیانه در سازمان عفو بین الملل گفت به نظر نمی رسد مقامات ایران زمینه و دلایل معقولی برای مجازات آمریکاییان داشته باشند. او گفت سازمان عفو بین الملل از آن بیم دارد که آنها به علت ملیتشان زندانی شده باشند.

Crown fire burns nearly 6,000 acres, more evacuations ordered

The Crown fire burning in northern Los Angeles County was threatening at least 1,500 homes in Leona Valley on Thursday night, according to the Fire Department.

Several structures have been lost, officials said, but they would not be able to determine whether those were homes or outbuildings on the many ranches in the area until Friday.

Capt. Sam Padilla, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said the Crown fire has burned nearly 6,000 acres. In addition to Leona Valley, evacuation orders have been issued for the nearby community of Ana Verde; and the fire was moving east toward Quartz Hill, leaving the possibility of more evacuations overnight.

Although flames were burning below transmission towers in the area, Padilla said there have been no interruptions of power to surrounding communities. At least one communications tower was on fire.

Inspector Matt Levesque of the L.A. County Fire Department said the fire is now generating its own wind, which can hamper firefighting efforts.

The burning structures were on the northern side of Leona Valley, an agricultural area west of Palmdale known for cherries and wine grapes.

About 500 firefighters are on the scene.

Shelters for people and small pets have been set up at the Agua Dulce Elementary School at 11311 W. Frascati St. and the Acton Community Center at 3748 Nickels Ave. Large animals can be taken to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 155 E Ave., Lancaster.

Structures burning in Leona Valley as Crown fire takes off

Homes and other structures were burning late Thursday evening in Leona Valley, an unincorporated town of 2,200 people that was evacuated earlier in the day because of the fast-moving Crown fire.

Inspector Matt Levesque, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said the blaze has burned more than 4,500 acres since it started this afternoon. He said the fire is now generating its own wind, which can hamper firefighting efforts.

The number of burning structures and whether they are homes or outbuildings has not been determined. They are on the northern side of Leona Valley, which is an agricultural area west of Palmdale known for cherries and wine grapes.

About 500 firefighters are on the scene.

Iran and U.S. send positive signals on nuclear talks

(Reuters) – Iran and the United States sent positive signals on Wednesday about the possibility of fresh talks on the Iranian nuclear program, which Washington suspects aims to develop atomic weapons.

Iran has given an assurance that it would stop enriching uranium to 20 percent purity if world powers agreed to a proposed nuclear fuel swap, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters in Istanbul.

The offer, conveyed to Davutoglu on Sunday, could bode well for an expected resumption of talks in September between Iran and major powers on the Islamic Republic’s atomic program, which Tehran says is for peaceful purposes and not for bombs.

Asked about Davutoglu’s comments, the U.S. State Department said Iran had often sent mixed signals but that the United States was “fully prepared” to resume talks among the six major powers and Tehran about Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran last met the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia in Geneva in October, when they discussed Iran sending some low-enriched uranium abroad in exchange for fuel for a Tehran reactor that makes medical isotopes.

“We hope to have the same kind of meeting coming up in the coming weeks that we had last October,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters. “We are interested in a process — more than one meeting.”

Uranium enrichment is a process that can produce fuel for nuclear reactors or, if carried out to a much higher degree, can yield fissile material for atomic bombs.

IRANIAN LETTER

In February, Iran announced that it had started enriching uranium to 20 percent purity, from about 3.5 percent previously, raising concern that it might be planning to enrich uranium still further and to produce weapons grade material.

Since June, fresh sanctions have been imposed on Iran by the U.N. Security Council, the United States, and, on Monday, by the European Union, increasing the pressure on Tehran.

One of the demands made in repeated U.N. Security Council resolutions is that Iran suspend uranium enrichment entirely.

Turkey and Brazil brokered a deal in May for a nuclear fuel swap in Tehran, hoping that this would draw Iran and major powers back to the negotiating table, but the six powers were lukewarm about the plan. At the time, Iran said it would continue enriching uranium to 20 percent.

Davutoglu, who met his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki and Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim on Sunday, said Iran was ready to lay to rest concern over its enrichment program if the proposed nuclear fuel swap went ahead.

“Another important message given by Mottaki during his visit to Turkey was that if the Tehran deal is signed and Iran is provided with the necessary fuel for its research activities, then they will not continue enriching uranium to 20 percent,” Davutoglu told a joint news conference with visiting German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.

Iran sent a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency on Monday, saying it was ready to negotiate the details of exchanging 2,646 pounds (1,200 kg) of its 3 percent enriched uranium for 265 pounds (120 kg) of 20 percent enriched uranium.

Davutoglu urged that talks on this subject with the so-called Vienna Group, comprising Russia, France, the United States and the IAEA, begin as soon as possible.

“The disagreements should be left aside and negotiations between the Vienna Group and Iran should be started right away,” he said. “As progress is made in those technical negotiations, the two sides will trust each other more.”

Davutoglu said Iran had also confirmed that EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and Iran’s chief negotiator, Saeed Jalili, could meet in early September, after the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

NATO-member Turkey has offered to store any swapped uranium and has gone into diplomatic overdrive in an attempt to ease tensions between Western allies and its neighbor.

A U.S. official said Iran may be trying to “have their cake and eat it too,” by swapping some low enriched uranium for nuclear fuel while continuing to enrich at some level.

“A lot depends on the details,” of what Iran is willing to do, he added, saying the West had responded coolly to Iranian initiatives earlier this year because they seemed designed to stymie U.N. Security Council sanctions that passed in June.

“Now that that process is completed, if Iran wants to engage on these subjects we are more than happy to have that conversation,” the official said.

Women’s top 6 sexual problems

It may sound like a headline from Cosmo, but a survey published in the Journal of the British Association of Urological Surgeons finds that the nearly two-thirds of women report  sexual dysfunction.

The top problem cited among women was lack of desire (47 percent), followed closely by orgasm problems (45 percent). Age, menopausal status and usage of antidepressants were statistically significant risk factors for female sexual dysfunction.

Researchers surveyed 587 women ages 18 to 95 who attend a New Jersey clinic.  Younger women cited problems with orgasms while older women lamented the lack of desire and satisfaction.

These were the most common problems overall:
1) lack of desire (47 percent)
2) orgasm problems (45 percent)
3) arousal issues (40 percent)
4) lack of satisfaction (39 percent)
5) lack of lubrication (37 percent)
6) pain (36 percent)

The top three sexual problems by age group, according to the study were:

Ages 18-30: orgasm (54 percent), desire (36 percent) and satisfaction (28 percent)
Ages 31-45: desire (48 percent), orgasm (43 percent) and satisfaction (40 percent)
Ages 46-54: desire (65 percent), satisfaction (53 percent) and orgasm (48 percent)
Ages 55-70: desire (77 percent), orgasm (66 percent), satisfaction (65 percent)

When a woman doesn’t want sex

Earlier this year, a highly anticipated  so-called “female Viagra,” a drug called flibanserin,  was nixed by a panel of Food and Drug Administration experts  who said the drug didn’t seem to really help women with sexual dysfunction.

This was the second time a so-called “female Viagra” failed to make it on the market; in 2004, an FDA panel said no to Intrinsa, a testosterone patch meant to hormonally help women with a lack of desire for sex. In the absence of a drug to help women with sexual problems, here’s what’s recommended by some practitioners, reported Elizabeth Cohen.

GM to sell Volt for $41K, lease for $350 a month

DETROIT – General Motors Co. said Tuesday itsChevrolet Volt electric car will cost $41,000 when it goes on sale in November.

While the price is about $8,000 more than its closest rival, the Nissan Leaf, GM said it will offer a $350-per-month lease deal that’s essentially equal to the Leaf’s. That will put the battery-powered Volt within reach of many people, GM said.

Both cars also are eligible for a federal tax credit that will cut their prices by $7,500. The Volt would fall to $33,500 while the Leaf’s would drop to $25,280 from nearly $33,000.

Some states, such as California, Georgia and Oregon, offer additional tax breaks that lower the price further.

The Volt, a 4-door sedan, runs on battery power for up to 40 miles but has a small gasoline engine to generate electricity once the battery runs down. The gas engine can generate power to run the car another 300 miles.

That’s a big selling point because some drivers worry about the battery going dead during trips. This so-called “range anxiety” dogged GM’s experimental EV-1 electric car in the 1990s.

To give the car wider appeal, drivers must know “they’re not going to get stranded,” said Joel Ewanick, GM vice president U.S. marketing, as he announced the Volt’s price at a conference in San Jose, Calif.

GM’s lease deal is $350 a month for 36 months with $2,500 down. Nissan’s lease plan is $349 per month for the same length of time with $1,995 down.

GM will unveil the Volt first in California, then in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Michigan and Texas. The cars will first be sold through 600 Chevrolet dealers. But in 12 to 18 months, dealers nationwide should offer the cars.

Nissan’s Leaf, which goes on sale in December, can go up to 100 miles on a charge. The car doesn’t have a gas engine and must be recharged once its battery is depleted.

Nissan spokeswoman Katherine Zachary said the Leaf itself emits no pollution and is designed for people whose daily travels are within its range.

واکنش ایران به تحریم های تازه اتحادیه اروپا

رامین مهمانپرست، سخنگوی وزارت امور خارجه ایران تحریم های جدید اتحادیه اروپا را بی اثر خواند و تاکید کرد که این مساله فقط به پیچیده تر شدن شرایط کمک خواهد کرد.

آقای مهمان پرست روز دوشنبه ۲۶ ژوئیه (۴ مرداد) به خبرگزاری رسمی ایران، ایرنا گفت که تحریم ها ابزار موثری برای احقاق حقوق ملت ها نیست و “تنها به پیچیده تر کردن شرایط و دور شدن از نقاط تفاهم کمک می کند.”

او این تحریم ها را فاقد مبنای حقوقی دانست.

وزیران خارجه اتحادیه اروپا در جلسه روز دوشنبه ۲۶ ژوئیه در مقر این اتحادیه در شهر بروکسل تحریم های جدیدی را علیه ایران تصویب کردند.

این تحریم ها در واکنش به برنامه هسته ای ایران است و گفته می شود شدید ترین تحریم هایی است که اتحادیه اروپا علیه یک کشور خارجی اعمال کرده است.

منع سرمایه گذاری در صنعت نفت و گاز ایران و محدودیت های بیشتر برای سپاه پاسداران و بانک های ایران و بازرسی برخی کشتی هایی که مقصدشان ایران است از جمله این تحریم هاست.

دولت کانادا نیز به طور جداگانه تحریم های تازه ای را علیه ایران تصویب کرد که بیشتر به صنعت نفت ایران و پالایش نفت خام و گاز طبیعی مایع مربوط می شود.

از سوی دیگر مسعود کاظمی وزیر نفت ایران هم این تحریم ها را بی اثر خواند و گفت که شرکت های نفتی اروپایی در صنعت نفت ایران هیچ حضوری نداشته اند.

او تاکید کرد که این تحریم ها باعث کاهش تولید نفت ایران نخواهد شد.

آقای کاظمی به توسعه میادین نفتی و گازی ایران اشاره کرد و گفت: “صد درصد میادین نفت و گاز ایران توسط شرکت های ایرانی در دست بهره برداری است.”

آمادگی ایران برای مذاکره بدون شرط

ساعاتی پس از اعلام خبر تصویب تحریم های تازه، ایران در نامه ای آمادگی اش را برای شرکت بدون شرط در مذاکرات برای تبادل سوخت اعلام کرد.

علی اصغر سلطانیه، نماینده دائم ایران در آژانس بین المللی انرژی هسته ای از تحویل نامه ایران، به یوکیا آمانو، مدیرکل این آژانس خبر داد.

به گفته آقای سلطانیه این نامه که پاسخ ایران به گروه وین و درباره تامین سوخت رآکتور تهران است.

آقای سلطانیه درباره متن نامه به خبرگزاری دانشجویان ایران، ایسنا گفت: “ما در این نامه اعلام کرده ایم که به محض اعلام آمادگی طرفین دیگر، ایران برای شرکت در مذاکرات و جلسات آمادگی کامل دارد.”

کاترین اشتون، مسئول سیاست خارجی اتحادیه اروپا ضمن استقبال از اعلام آمادگی ایران برای مذاکره درباره تبادل سوخت هسته ای گفت: “لازم است که ما بیشتر از جزئیات (این مساله) بدانیم.”

پیش تر سران برزیل و ترکیه به تهران سفر کردند تا برای گشایش بن بست موجود در مذاکرات هسته ای ایران و کشورهای غربی تلاش کنند.

آنها پس از دیدار با محمود احمدی نژاد، رئیس جمهوری ایران، بیانیه ای امضا کردند که از نظر آنها راهی بود برای ادامه مذاکرات هسته ای دو طرف و بیرون آمدن از بن بست.

اما این توافق هم نتوانست جلوی تصویب تحریم های بیشتر شورای امنیت سازمان ملل علیه ایران را بگیرد.
